Damian Marley heads list for Reggae category at MOBO Awards

Some of the Dancehall/Reggae industry’s top-tier acts are up for one of urban music’s most coveted honors as they compete for the highly-acclaimed Best Reggae Act at this year’s Music Of Black Origin (MOBO) Awards in the United Kingdom.

Grammy-winning Dancehall/Reggae entertainers, Sean Paul and Damian ‘Jr. Gong’ Marley have been nominated for this award while deejay of the year contenders, Konshens, Popcaan and Mr. Vegas are also in contention.

Sean Paul might be tipped as the slight favorite for the award given that his latest album, Tomahawk Technique cracked the United Kingdom’s charts with popular singles such as She Doesn’t Mind, Got 2 Luv U and How Deep Is Your Love, featuring former Destiny’s Child star, Kelly Rowland.

Damian ‘Jr. Gong’ Marley has also become a fixture on the UK singles charts this year with his chart topping smash, Affairs of the Heart while Mr. Vegas garnered similar success through his effort, Bruk It Down.

Meanwhile, Konshens, who many industry insiders perceive as the best deejay for 2012, has enjoyed chart-topping success worldwide with his debut album, Mental Maintenance while tracks off the album such as Do Sumn, Gal a Bubble and Stop Sign dominated the UK charts.

Popcaan, who’s followed up strongly after a breakthrough year in 2011, has maintained his stronghold in Europe with songs like Clean and Only Man She Want.

The MOBO Awards has witnessed past winners in the Reggae category such as Gyptian, Alborosie and the aforementioned Sean Paul.

This year’s edition of the MOBO Awards will take place in Liverpool, England on November 3.
