Reggae Star Carlos Jones Invited to perform at the White House

Back in November of 2008, Carlos Jones & the P.L.U.S. Band performed at an Election Night party at the House of Blues. Cleveland’s most popular reggae act celebrated the news of Barack Obama’s victory that night with a spirited version of Jamaican reggae artist Cocoa Tea’s tune “Barack Obama.”

On Monday, Jones will perform one of his own tunes at the White House during the 133rd annual Easter Egg Roll. He'll be accompanied by P.L.U.S. Band keyboardist Peter Platten and drummer Will Douglas. How does this happen? you might possibly be wondering ...

The opportunity came about thanks to Jones’ brother and sister-in-law, who founded the Los Angeles-based Rhythm Child Network in 2003 to help children explore music through percussion. The program has gotten widespread acclaim, and word got back to the White House. It extended an invitation to Norman Jones to be part of the event; he in turn extended it to his brother and friends back home in Cleveland.

The Jones brothers then penned a tune called “Get Up and Go” for the occasion, in honor of this year’s theme: promoting children’s health. They’ll debut the song at the event.
