Majekodumni Fasheke popularly known as Majek ‘The Rain maker’ Fashek is undoubtedly the most popular reggae artist from Nigeria. He first came to prominence in the early 80’s making music with his band Jastix which comprised of himself, Ras Kimono and Amos McRoy Greg. By the late 80’s Majek Fashek went solo and scored big with his monster hit single ‘Send down the rain’ which went ahead to become one of the most popular songs in Nigeria during the late 80’s and early 90’s. Rumor has it that during the video shoot for the hit song, it actually started to rain…the story became almost a folk tale crowning Majek as ‘The rain maker’!!
At the prime of his music career, Majek was likened to legends like Bob Marley and Jimi Hendrix. He won several awards and was signed to different international record labels including: Island records, Tuff Gong- Which have also signed artist like Bob Marley and Interscope records- which have been responsible for superstars such as Dr. Dre, Eminem and 50 cent! By the late 90’s however, hard living, pressure and drugs had got the best of the rain maker and his career started to take a nose dive to musical limbo.
Over the next decade, his career, fame and personal health had detoriated to an all-time low to the point where he was homeless and entertained pedestrians on the streets of New York for change. It seemed like Majeks Fasheks days of glory were completely over and all he had left were stories of his hay days. When it sems all hope was lost, in 2012 a Lagos based record label offered Majek a N15 million Naira record deal to put out an album and a tour which will take him to Canada, Spain, Italy and other parts of Europe.
Guess we’ve not seen the last of the raim maker. Second chances really do come true!
